“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks”
-John Muir
In January of 2021, Fresh Eyes formally emerged as I longed to shift my clinical psychology practice from the confines of tele-health and four walls to the expanse of sun, sky, earth and trees. During the pandemic, the pull outdoors became vital as I needed reminders of the beauty and peace of nature and all of its adaptive qualities, in addition to a healthy separation from work and home. I found that same need existed for my clients. We started meeting in local nature preserves and they served as therapeutic oases, providing a means for my clients and I to meet safely with the added benefit of soaking in all that nature can provide and each others physical presence.
Fresh Eyes found its name as the first thing I notice when I’m burned out is a weary, overstimulated fatigue behind my eyes. Behind the fatigue is an emotional experience that clues me into my mental and psychological well-being. One might recognize it as exhaustion, sadness, brain fog, discontent and/or overwhelm. I found benefits associated with the resting of one's eyes, with a combination of: mindfulness, nature exposure, tuning into senses, grounding with gentle walking and stretching, providing space for the heart, body and soul and soaking up eye contact from the gentle presence of others. All of these tools to name but a few, freshens not only eyes but our well-being and extends to our interactions in the world.
Seeing the world from a fresh perspective is facilitated through Fresh Eyes-Mindful Nature Walks. After a Mindful Nature Walk, you can carry with you a heightened attunement and awareness of your environment, your neighbors and yourself, finding your reservoir filled rather than depleted. The time spent soothing your mind, body and spirit in nature’s presence and with others can be internalized and carried home with you in the breath and experience cultivated.
